Driving Green Construction

Roadbridge are always at their happiest when surrounded by big yellow machines, but yesterday was an extra special day when we received delivery of the latest additions to our fleet and mark the beginning of a new chapter in our history.  The Komatsu HB365LC model’s will become our first Hybrid excavators.

Conor Gilligan (Roadbridge MD) and Michael McHale (McHale Plant Sales)

Komatsu’s hybrid system can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 40%.  Hybrid excavators feature a unique one hundred percent electric swing system. All the hydraulic power is freed up for the boom, arm and bucket movements, with cycle times and productivity greatly improved.

The electric swing motor/generator captures and regenerates energy as the upper structure slows down and converts it into electric energy. The captured energy is stored in the ultra-capacitor and used by the generator/motor to assist the engine when it needs to accelerate.

This is the latest move by Roadbridge as part of our Energy Management System, where we have already begun the process of transitioning our vehicle fleet towards the use of electric cars.  We currently have six fully electric Hyundai Kona’s on the road and will be increasing these numbers over the coming months.

We are very much looking forward to testing out the new Komatsu’s on our projects, and all going well, this is only the beginning of the hybrid/electric era.
