A465 Heads of the Valleys Sections 5 & 6

  • Company Involvement FCC Construction was awarded the contract to Design and Build the project. The Earthworks and Drainage packages of works was sub-contracted to Roadbridge from FCC Construction. FCC, Roadbridge and Tarmac were awarded the contract to operate the road for a period of 30 years.

The Heads of the Valleys Highways Improvements Scheme, Section5 and 6 extended from Hirwaun in the west to Dowlais Top in the east, passing to the north of Merthyr Tydfil. The length of the scheme was 17.7km. The scheme was predominately an on-line improvement of the existing A465 trunk road. Six junctions were provided within the scheme, all of which were grade separated. The junctions included Hirwaun, Croesbychan, Baverstock, A470, Prince Charles Hospital and Dowlais.

  • 7 no overbridges, 5 no viaducts, 11 no underbridges, 5 no underpasses, 23 no retaining walls, 1 no railway bridge, 3 no pedestrian bridges and 1 Gas Protection slab
