  • Characterise the behaviour of chalks at field scale
  • Define suitable improvement options to re-use site won chalk at HSR fill
  • Check that the site won chalks after improvement meet the HS2 Technical Standards
  • Measure the in-situ shear wave velocity (Vs) on fill materials
  • Measure the in-situ bearing capacity (Ev2)
  • Define the suitable compaction meted to achieve maximum density
  • Identify optimum compaction method: best combination (roller type/ thickness/ number of passes) to maximise density and optimise the compaction efficiency
  • Identify the necessity of foundation treatment and find an appropriate way to reuse excavated materials as foundation treatment
  • Give confidence in the earthworks strategy to allow a reduction in the volume of testing during construction (programme and H&S benefits)
  • Allow the cement stabilised UEF to be assessed in terms of prevention of mobilisation of fines.
